The point is Jodie doesn't seem to be gay; she acts beautifully and sounds beautifully as a woman. But the gaydar never fails... so, it was pointless to air anything without "the L word". Foster wisdom. You all read The Genius of Jodie Foster's Speech. (Sam Leith) By the way, the wisest analysis of them all!! The same way she played with words she did with her observers. I read once (forgot the reference) that she is her best character!

Ah I remember Leith's pseudo in-depth rhetorical device analysis for beginners (including footnotes for us dummies lol) Well, he obviously is a fan of Jodie Foster.
But there is another theory that says we only witnessed a performance. Beautiful and flawless like always, sure. And somehow this article supports this theory, unwillingly I guess.

As a Literature teacher, I could see she used much more Linguistic figures but he chose only the most obvious one, as you said. But I have to confess I was nervous and worried and had to see it many times in order to find hidden meanings. There's a book available "You talking to me" that is acceptable (Leith's) and you learn so much. The idea is "rethoric from Aristotle to Obama". He looks wise and serene. About the theories I don't really know - whenever I believe I have come to any conclusion someone finds something in the opposite direction so I'll never will be sure about her real intention unless she writes it but the speech is too "tidy". Rubens Ewald Filho (serious movie critic, heir to Holywood Dulce Damaceno de Brito) refer to it like true star performance. www.dvdmagazine.com.br/2012/materias/materia/title/108-globo-de-ouro-2013-impressoes Anyway, there's something here, - releasing of Martin Scorsese box of DVDs -let me know if you have it, I mean, the Portuguese version is in no way less valuable than the English one. I'm using this in my classes and the organizers were simple but effective. The collection brings the original script of Taxi Driver with the link to the movie so I can lead the beginner to a higher level of understanding. Usually I compare to Louis Malle's Pretty Baby (love comparative views), but the booklet is so cool that I have a lot of extra material for the boys and I stick to one subject only. The "Zona Franca de Manaus" made it beautifully here, so, I was thinking that instead of buying international JF stuff you could accept them from other fans (the ones willing to donate) at least from now on. I'll be glad to share it and always order two copies of everything here...

"Stop analyzing me!" once was an interview headline haha.
The problem with the Guardian article is that the author is so excited about his findings that he misses the forest for the trees. J.W. Goethe said it doesn't matter how this or that word is exactly written. It's more important that people can understand you. (and he added "seems my beloved Germans sometimes did") And so for my taste Leith goes quite out on a limb with his "the clever, elegant way she used the power of rhetoric to get her point across". Because the internet and press afterwards was also full of people who were like huh? and what?
Aside the fact she spoke way too long and totally ignored the actual reason she came here this night - the lifetime award, a detail one might consider impolite, she wasn't understood by many non-insiders. I think it would be too easy to name everyone with big question marks in their faces just ignorant. It's more like she felt for using her polished jargon (call it Jodie code or whatever) more for hiding something than to open up. Why? Well, as to me, I see nothing but Angst. And that's the reason this speech had performance qualities. It may sound crazy but are you really sure you can tell when she's acting and when she's not?

It was the most beautiful speech ever. It transcended time and space. There was just this little room, and I could hear her perfectly.

A really good excelent point Mario. (in parts) This post is so rich you made-make me search for old interviews. This sentence: "It may sound crazy but are you sure you can tell when she's acting and when she's not?" We have a thousand ways of analyzing her in spite of the headline. She is a living contradiction, or not. We can always see her either through philosophical eyes or psychological eyes and she'll always seem contradictory. Polonius: "Above all things be faithful to thine own self", and she seems to be. Then she is a puzzle and takes another way to her aim. But actually we all know what's her next step. "Things change" and at the same time they don't. Many layers... is it a game? is this the way she keeps us? is she only for the "bright ones"? Manipulation or authenticity? I love a video by a girl in Youtube. "Beth Translates Jodie Foster's Speech". It's naive and plain: If you weren't busy twitting you could have seen the beauty of JF speech... And this is what it is: eager to see beyond we saw too much; did we? Well, back to your point: I always thought I knew when she was acting (I think she's a lot better off stage) as far. That's why the speech has performance qualities. I thought she had less questions with "the girls" and more with herself. She fooled me.

I predict JF WILL NOT be there. Can't see that happening especially with all the crazy rumors lately...on the other hand...what a way to dispel them

Yes I agree, think they won't appear together. Don't know about you but a little rumor strangely has an effect on how you see AH, the serious photographer. Marginalized somehow, with the Über lesbian celeb Foster on your site what is your own little career worth? I mean it must be difficult for anyone to stand within Jodie's huge shadow when you appear somewhere. Looking back it's clear why Cyd has been such an excellent partner for both needs.
The non-rational part of my brain says: Come on Jodie, surprize me.

So the reason jodie won't be joining is according you?
Romers are true..or the présence of jodie would take away the attention on AH?

Living contradiction, now that's pretty commonplace don't you think. I see gaps (sometimes an abyss) between her words and what you get to see on the screen, or choice of films in general. I guess they result from the missing links we know nothing about. Even in five decades of giving interviews she doesn't tell all. The only persons who might be able to see real contradictions must be her mom, her kids, or Cydney. What I mean is, with the sources we outsiders have, you can't do any serious deep explorations.

Did you notice this is only a small event, she signs her (old) catalogue for half an hour. I doubt JF even leaves the warm bed, puts on make-up, dress, too tight shoes, plugs in the hearing aid and takes the Audi from the garage for half an hour...when Alex should be person of interest that night anyway. No way. She might whisper something like 'be back soon ok?' to her though..

Yes, so don't waste your time with analyzing her. Look at me, I'd be happy with some answers to a certain little movie nobody knows.

42 years! And it was like a hidden message. >>And my longtime friends, Lily Tomlin and her love, the writer Jane Wagner, got married on the eve of 2014. ... My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents.<< See it's never too late Ms Foster. lat.ms/1fbMfbW

Perfect remark from Artfuldodger, following the old Charles Dicken's constant motto. Although I entirely agree with you about "personification", I cannot see her engaged in any traditional form of behavior. Marriage is too burgeouis, too demanding, and it's too much charging... Anyway, I see something here: "I see gaps (sometimes an abyss) between her words and what you get to see on the screen, or choice of films in general." I didn't really understand the connection (in accordance to your point of view) between her words and her lines or her choices of films. Circumstances and contingency.

BTW Chris, you said you're a fan since the early days. When are you going to post some vintage treasures from your collection? Not complaining but all I've seen so far are re-posts you found elsewhere. I don't know, but I expected you had at least some pre-90s pics from South-American sources to share. Much talking here..show me some goodies now.

I had Jodie's face in my diapers. I'll find a way of copying anything; need technology. I never cared about it. I'm still laughing at: "vintage treasures" ... You're so funny... (I still haven't seen Jodie; someone said she's a computer program) BTW as well, the talk was cool. It made me stop watching the new Brazilian edition of Anna.
